Rutman Shoals Marine Lab Scholars
PURPOSE: Scholarship, internship and research opportunities to current and prospective students and to support the development and delivery of new courses over a 7 year period from 2014-2021. Specifically, there will be four initiatives: • Rutman Scholar Fellowship: Merit-based support for 2-6 of the best and brightest UNH undergraduates to participate in SML courses. A $6,000 award would cover tuition, room, board and fees for the average 3 credit hour course. • Rutman Research Intern: 2-4 undergraduate interns will conduct summer research under the guidance of a faculty member in such areas as engineering, ornithology, marine mammals and intertidal biodiversity. A $3,000 award would support a ten-week internship. • Rutman Fund: Awards in the range of $2,000 to reduce the cost of attending Shoals for current UNH students and talented high school students with an interest in STEM disciplines. • UNH Faculty Shoals Marine Laboratory Initiative: New course development and delivery is critical for sustaining the excellence of SML. The School is committed to developing two new courses and will rely on approximately $15,000 of the Donors’ gift to develop one of these courses for Year 2 of this initiative. Other: Any remaining funds after the initial 7 year period are to be used for the Rutman Scholars, Interns and the Rutman Fund.
